I strongly disagree with your assessment of Socialized healthcare. You wouldn't pay for something you were already paying for. In Florida if a business owner knowingly has an illegal on his payroll, the owner may face jail time. I know this first hand because one of our employees furnished a social security number and the social security administration say it does not match the number they have for him. The problem is that the number they have is the exact same as what we furnished on his behalf.

Lived in Europe for four years. Their great privatized medicine was so great that when any Soldier married one of the Europeans, the first thing that they wanted to do was get off of their medical system and over to the militaries. Why you may ask. Because you are always treated to the bare minimum unless you are somebody of some type of status over there. Europeans flock to the USA to recieve medical care because of the incompetencies of the doctors in Europe. They are all paid the same no matter how good/bad of a doctor they are.
Ask a European how much of their monthly pay goes to taxes. I am not sure what it is now, but a few years ago it was 30%. I do not want to give up 30% of my pay to pay for individuals that are to lazy to get off of their fat asses and work so that they can pay the same amount as everybody else does for medical insurance. It is not my job to pay for everybody else to have the same luxuries and standards of living as I do because I have worked my entire life while they have sat at home taking it easy.
Trust me as a Soldier the pay ain't that great and my wife has worked right along with me for 20+ years so that we could have what we wanted. But Obama would not know any of that. I am quiet sure he couldn't even tell you what a Private in the Army makes a month, but he wants to be the Commander in Chief of the most powerful military in the World. Scares the hell out of me. Only saving grace is, I will be retired before he could get elected and take office.

And if the govenment said today that we are going to get the oil supply that is here. The futures trading would also drop the price of a barrrel of oil immediatly. I have to agree with Dons common sense approach for defining a hero. We all do a job of some sort, and agree to do that job for a certain amount of money. We go into it knowing what risks there may be so being made to perfom to the greatest extent of our job description should be acceptable by the employee. It may seems like a hard ass approach but it does make sense.
My father was in the army. He was a POW and survived despite being tortured and stabbed in the abdomin. While under a sneak attack he saw a grenade land behind a few soldiers so he jumped on it and threw it away from them but it went off to close to him and he lost an eye. As Don said, he did not volunteer to be captured and it was his will to live that got him thru the torture. I do think he is somewhat of a hero for risking his life to save a few others. To bad that later in life he did things that would tarnish our vision of him as a hero but that is another story for a different day.

Our country has been controlled by one party since the early 1900's - the green party - I by green I mean money and bankers. Every president we have had has been put there by a special interest groups. Each one has their own groups they pander to. George W is an obvious oil man, with strong ties to the banking industry. You make 100.00 gross pay. assume you are in a tax bracket you pay 25%. so now you are down to 75. you go to fill up with gas. 15 gallons at 4 per gallon. You paid another 7 bucks in taxes on the fuel. So you have spent 60 out of that 100. The government received 32 of the 100 (25 in income tax and 7 in the fuel) and you have 15 bucks left. the gas station owner made about 2 bucks. the oil company made about 5 bucks. the refiners make out like a bandit at something like 1 dollar per gallon, (sometimes higher depending on location and of course nobody really knows what the refiners profit margins really are. Refining total adds about .27 per gallon. )

Those that say "cut taxes" always make me laugh. They seem to be the first to bitch that the roads are fucked up or that crime is high or that there aren't enough employees at the DMV. The truth is, we don't need to cut the government out if we want safety, healthcare, education etc. We need to prevent any one private entity from having sole control over our lives. CNkiss I don't think we are fucked most Americans will smarten up before they enter the voting booth as Obama will continue to say nothing of any value that is believable. Why won't he join Mccain in town hall meetings I'll tell you why if he is not behind a teleprompter he is lost! Just look at some of the one on one interviews with him and you will see a different Obama of he is a great speaker when he has a prepared speech in front of him I want to hear him answer some hard questions from everyday people in town hall meetings.

All this talk about how to fix the US economy is complete bullshit. The United States no longer has even half the capacity to produce enough to support itself. Farmlands are continuously paved over to put up more houses and factories are torn down and the work is sent oveseas where the labor is cheap. We can neither build our basic needs nor can we grow enough food to feed the country so we are at the mercy of trade with other nations to get our basic needs. Look at the computer you are reading this forum from, how much of it do you think was actually made in the US? I would wager that outside of assembly 99% of your computer was made in some Asian country.
There are 3 primary factors that I firmly believe have brought the world to the crisis point it currently is at. They are: National defense, religion, and commodities trading.
Every country in the world spends billions if not trillions of dollars annually on a belief that their borders have to be protected from every outside entity in an effort to "keep its population safe". If we were to adopt or get forced to adopt a single global government then the monies spent for "National Defense" could be put into research towards technologies that could lead to a world not reliant on oil or any other fossil fuel. We could also then allow countries like Brazil to bring in the necessary foodstuffs to feed itself without cutting down millions of acres of rain forrest.
Then you have Religion. No other belief has caused more death and destruction than organized religion. The Islamics kill Jews, Jews retalliate and kill more Islamics. For centuries, Roman Catholics considered it their duty to either convert or kill anyone that was not Catholic. Afterall if they weren't Catholic then they were heathen and not considered even truly human. (just look at the rationalizations for the enslavement of Africans)
That brings us to Commodities Trading. Trading is a way to artificially create a profit by the buying and selling of shares in a particular item. No actual product is either bought or sold but the action causes the prices paid for those goods by the companies that manufacure something out of them to either go up or down. For instance, some trader in Chicago buys shares of wheat causing the price of wheat to almost double. The flour mill has to then pay that price to the farmer of the wheat in order to make flour. The mill in turn sells the flour to the bread maker for double what they did the last batch. So finally, the bread maker has to pass on this increased cost to the general consumer who buys the bread to make his sandwhiches. In the end it is always the consumer that gets the shaft when it comes to commodity trading, all they see is that the end product costs them more now than it did in the past, all while their income is not likely to increase to match. There is no longer a control of supply and demand, prices paid are determined solely by what the commodity traders say the price should be.
I say that it is high time the world experiences another major depression. A big enough depression would cripple the world markets and likely topple any of a number of governments. If the depression is big enough and lasts long enough it may even cause wide spread deaths from disease and famine. Those that survive will hopefully find a better way to get along.

But yes, the bankers have found out how to creep into every aspect of our lives. Seriously, the only way we take power back (never going to happen) is to start making small changes in your everyday life:
1. Turn of your TV - You will be amazed at the amount of time you have. Plus, you will limit the intrusion of BUY THIS and BELIEVE THIS that is pumped into your home.
2. Grow some of your own food - A small garden can lower your grocery bill and you can actually get some decent nutriotion out of your food and can keep you from starving if things "really go to hell" also, it will limit trips to the store. If you cannot grow a garden, hit the local farmers markets. Better food, and it does not have to be trucked or flown in. Bonus - learn how to bottle and can and have food in the winter.
3. Ride a bike to work once or twice a week - the gas that goes unused can change the commodoties market based on their percieved perception of supply and demand. A personal savings (i ride twice a week to work, I live in UT county and work in Sandy and that saves me $4.00 bucks a day, 8 per week, 32 per month and since I can only ride about 7 months out of the year about 250 a year in savings nothing major, but when you times that buy a few million people....you get the point)
4. Buy gold and silver - the only real source of wealth that people can own and hold in their hands that will never be worth 0. Gold in the hands of common folks makes the banks and govt nervous as hell. (don't believe me? check out what the govt did in the early 1930s) Also, if you are holding actual gold instead of holding your $$ in a savings account. Banks cannot lend on it and it messes with them big time.
5. Get out of debt - Think about this for a second. You give the banks your money which they will pay2% interest on. They loan out your money at 8%, they make 6% margin on your money and if it all goes bad, it is insured for up to 100K per depositor. And if it belly's up, you are screwed not them. So, if you quit borrowing and save your money as gold instead of in a savings account, banks are proper fucked. Credit cards....are you kidding me? do not even need to go there.
Has anybody noticed that there are a ton of campaigns that are encouraging people to put money into savings account? Anybody wondered why? The banks are forclosing at record paces, so they are owning houses and cash flow is in the shitter...THEY NEED YOUR CASH they want you to put it with them! Maybe you both, along with a lot of other sexy couples who feel the same should move to Florida. The house next to us is available. We have wild Florida panthers living in our backyard. Wild boar are all over the place here. Ditto the deer population. We have a fresh water lake in our front yard and the gulf of mexico very close too for fishing. You can go any time of the year and pick fruit off a tree here. As you can see, we are in the right place if we do indeed hit such severe times.

Actualy we (family) have a place in St Augustine already. Several places actualy. So if it does get that bad we may just do that.... But in the mean time. If there is a way this country can possibly have a chance to stave this depression off. One big thing that would help is this country going and getting the domestic oil supplies. Please Call your congress and demand it.. wheather you hate the oil companies or not. If congress gets thier heads out of the asses and rulles that we will start drilling for our domestic oil supplies the price of oil will drop like a rock. On the other hand you have social medicine. Who's primary goal (to keep costs down) is to cure, instead of treat.
The downside to social medicine is that, as with everything free, it will be overused. A simple doctors visit could be months out. So don't hold your breath. The lines will last forever.
But are either good?

Not to over simplify, but lets take a look at the CFL bulb for instance. THe companies who pioneered this and are pushing it, are spending loads of $$ on lobbying in washington working on getting a ban on incandesant bulbs (normal bulbs) as they are energy inefficient. OK great, but did you know that CFL's are laden with mercury? The EPA wants them recycled becuase if they go to landfill they can contaminate. From the EPA site:
"Nationwide, over 670 million mercury-containing bulbs are discarded each year. Most of these bulbs are still discarded with municipal solid waste that is ultimately landfilled or incinerated. These disposal methods can lead to a release of elemental mercury into the environment through breakage and leakage and ultimately contaminate the food chain."

Don, I don`t know how anyone can not agree with your last post. We have friends that moved here from another counrty and have lived in both types of society. I can not count the times they have asked why there is so much hate here and jealousy. They do not understand when they see a Mercedes drive past a homeless person and not stop to make an offering. They have asked me "why did you let there get to be such wealthy people while the others do not know where the next meal is coming from or where they will sleep tonight"

So tell me what is your advice so I can pass it along to this couple and their three kids. I have heard reports that offshore drilling for oil may take up to ten years for that oil to hit the market. So the oil companies get at least ten more years to fuck us and not even offer a cigarette afterward. I don`t think Don is suggesting we make the move to communism but to nationalize the oil seems like a decent plan. By doing that, it does not mean we are becoming a communist country. Here is another example.

However I also am a big believer in fact, over misinformation or blind theory. So whenever someone steps into the realm of stupid I'll be there, whenever there is injustice you know who you can call... whenever someone is in need there will be.... HUBBYNHOTTIE.

Whiteghost, that is the smartest thing that has been written on these message boards in a long time. I wish we could make it come true.
After watching the movie "ZEITGEIST" we don't think it really matters who you vote for the Bankers and Fed reserve has controlled this country for decades the president is nothing but a puppet who is controlled by whomever is out to make the most money.
After seeing that movie we think RON PAUL is the one who would come the closest to actually making sense of course he wants to abolish the Income Tax and return to the GOLD standard we are afraid big money would never allow it they would find some way to shut him up.
We are all fucked and don't think there is much we can do about it all you can do is make sure you VOTE at least in your own mind you will know you did the right thing and that was to at least let your vote be one of the ones that made a difference good or bad only time will tell.
