as a avid jeep fan that likes to hit moab's trails as much as possible this is a step in the wrong direction.... Clinton closed down 29 trails when he passed the Grand Escalante staircase wilderness pact and now they are trying to close even more area near moab and zions.... and they don't even want to have a debate on this....

And Obama hasn't even taken office yet to help them....

This just bites my ass... more and more ground is being closed to everyone except if you hike in and out... and most of it being directed by people that have never been to Utah but think they have a right to close it down for everyone....

anyway enough from me... and to the article...

It sounds like what the religious right did with prop 8 in California. They were overruled by the supreme court trying to pass an unconstitutional law, so they try to circumvent the supreme court ruling by changing their constitution, without using the state's legislative system correctly. I hope the fuckin supreme court strikes that bullshit down expeditiously. Only time will tell.
The article stated - "This big, bipartisan package of bills represents years of work by senators from many states, and both parties, in cooperation with local communities
Agreed.
there is a difference between making an area a state park for everyone to enjoy and making it a wilderness area that only those that can hike in and out can enjoy... I have no complaint about them making it a state or even a national park cause that allows people to go and enjoy it but when they make it a wilderness area it pretty much cuts 5/6 of the population out of the enjoying it.

And the reason this has been in debate for many years is that it was shut down the past few years and not allowed to go to vote where as now they are ramming it thru to vote.
ok I did some research on this and in the washington county area which will be hit the most in Utah of the documented trails in that area we will be losing almost 75% of them. not just limited use but actual lose of trail with no use at all... unless you have two legs and care to hike in and out...

So am I crying wolf or are we actually getting raped here?
I agree that sitting down and compromising on issues does work and would be great but SUWA doesn't want to sit down and talk they will not come to the table so where does that leave ya?

And being that is an old study (1980) things have changed and there are organizations that are promoting the proper use of ATV and dirt bikes and the treadlightly foundation is very popular with 4x4 clubs and work hand in hand to clean up and stop destruction where it happens.

I have been part of many trail cleanups and every year contrilbute to a fund that places garbage dumpsters and toilets on a popular area in Moab.

This is what is called doing the right thing but when a organization wants to shut things down so only 3 % of the population can see the sites that is just wrong.
