The "surge" - isn't this code for adding more troops because inadequate troops were initially involved and/or the initial strategy was faulty?
Due to politics, I have seen very little mainstream "news" on what is going on war-wise in Iraq and Afghanistan?
Is military engagement with Iran likely?

Surge isn't code it is what it is. An increase in power to overcome the obstacle. In the case of Afghanistan, Taliban. Inadequate troops, no. Inadequate number of troops maybe but not likely. Initially the taliban was on the run, however, over the last couple of years, our so called ally, Pakistan, has allowed them over the border to regroup, recruit and train. We are not officially allowed to chase after and destroy them. ( Sounds like Cambodia/VietNam.)

Iraqi Government has assumed control of 75% of the provinces in the country, leaving only 25% under U.S. Control. Detroit murders in 2007 396. U.S. troop deaths in Iraq last 12 months--343.
A break down of Casualties in Iraq that I found puts it in these categories.
the first 43 days of combat 140 for a daily ave of 4.02
the next 424 days (Turn over of Sovereignty to Iraq) 718 Ave 1.9
the next 216 days (Iraqi election day) 580 Ave.2.93
the next 730 days until troop surge 1648 ave. 2.3
the 534 days of the surge 1040 ave. 1.95

Afghanistan has shown an increase in violence and U.S. Troop casualtes in the last 3-4 years.
"Is military engagement with Iran likely?" Not in the near future I don't think. Everyone knows we are not ready to fight on yet a 3rd front. Just my guess.
