Since "WHY#1?" thread is proving to be a very interesting read, and providing me with more food for thought and info than I could quickly find out on my own - I'd like to pose two questions?
1. how in the world (pun intended) can more of these ???????? be convinced that endless excavating of organic resources from beneath the earth's surface, burning the energy content and spewing the waste into the atmosphere at an exponentially increasing rate cannot be harming the environment? Shit, we've only been attacking the planet with our irresponsible ways in a serious manner for about 100 years (read that automobiles) - give us another 50 years and the question will have long since been answered, but apparently too late.
2. to the ????????, (try to remember your science classes) - think of the world as an enormous test tube - we are finite - we end at the end of our atmosphere - now imagine what is happening in our test tube in light of question #1 - please skip misinformation, disinformation or any other kind of information and simply answer how, in basic logical terms, we are not in the process of fucking ourselves?
Thank You,
D

Here is my view on this for anyone who doesn't believe in Global Warming...
WHO CARES! Does it hurt to reduce energy consumption? No. Does it hurt to go green? No. Does it hurt to do your part in making our world a better place to live? No.
Global Warming or not, it's not going to hurt you to do these things and if it helps the environment in any way, isn't that still a good thing? I think so.

HEAR HEAR!!!
No, it doesn't hurt. We should be careful however with policies that govern our lives and force us to go green (especially if global warming turns out to be false). I am speaking of legislation mandating which light bulbs you can buy and so forth. We choose to do green things and will continue, but to be forced is a little much. Just a thought.
I"m going to get blasted for this I"m sure..but how the hell can you deny the affects of what we do..on the environment??? Do some research, it's pretty damn obvious!
there are so many small things we can do to make a huge difference!

I agree Heathen.
For anyone that has not seen An Inconvenient Truth, I recommend it. The data and facts they show make you think. I know there are those out there that believe in divine creation and not evolution, no matter what the facts say, but watch it for the information provided.
Even if Global warming isnt the biggest problem, look at the way the worlds resources are affecting our everyday life. Increased Oil consumption around the world has created higher demand and higher prices for gas. The higher prices for gas has increased the cost of everything and every product out there to get it transported from one place to another. People have less money to spend on other things besides gas, and a lot of businesses are going to get hurt.

We only have a few comments for this thread:
"Ignorance is bliss"
"All things in moderation"
"Do you like living & breathing"
Global warming does exist just as high gas prices exist. This isn't theory or fluctuations over time. Unfortunately those that truely control the means to change ignore the reality. Mankind is on a course to destroy itself, realizes it, yet continues down the same path. If you are trying to get to Florida but you are on 75 North, when you realize it there are two choices. You can continue driving the wrong way on 75 North or you can turn around and get on 75 South and reach your destination. We as a species are still on 75 North. Have a great afternoon all!

SANDYCOUPLE,
If the standards of what is considered green are legislated and we define what constitutes enviro-friendly, then all light bulbs will be made to that specification. You have to set a standard, else the fat cats will continue to abuse the environment.
The funny thing is that most people that do not believe the environment is being impacted are republican capitalists. It directly correlates with money. It costs extra to be green. It's more overhead. Those that oppose it are those that stand to lose money.
The arguments I heard are that "we can't go back in history far enough to benchmark our impact" and that our climate as risen and fallen in the past. I agree that these things are true. However, <u>NEVER</u> in history have we created polymers and other chemicals that are poisoning our water. Never before have our oceans been polluted with polymers, crude oil and other chemicals. Never before has there been nuclear waste in our environment with some of the half-lives being 200,000 fucking years. Never before have fossil fuel emissions being poured into the atmosphere and rained into all the fields where animals and plants absorb them. People that say the environment isn't being adversely affected by this are fuckin lying to everyone, including themselves. I say force corporations to start paying for their shit!

LOL people people... for god sake investigate for yourselves. Stop regurgitating the libral media and look up the facts. Over the last 8 to 10 years we have actualy been on a cooling trend. in fact the last 2 years have been the coolest on record in 60 plus years. Just ask your ski resort owners how great the last 2 years have been. Record snowfall and record long seasons. The polar ice caps have actualy increased in size. the polar bears population has increased not decrease.. The fucking idiot enviromentelist have actualy admited that. The same scientists who were saying we were warming are now saying we are in fact cooling and it is a cycle change.. Weather is and has been for millions of years on a 25 to 30 cycle caused by the sun. For god sake look it up . Look up weather paterns and weather history. during the early seventies they thought we were headed into another ice age. Why was there heavy snow just yesterday in the mountains of the west coast. here on the east coast we just this week had our first days of the year over 90 dagrees.. Its June 10th today.. We usually have had days in the 90s by the early to mid May. Stop being sheep and get the info people.
Ok here is a question for you believers... If global warming is in fact true. Why is it that people with much much more money and infomation than any of us including me Are building like crazy in south florida. You look at the miami skyline and the is new building after new building. Cranes all over.. Seems kinda crazy for multi millionares to be throwing money out the window if its all gonna get washed away soon. Just a thought.. Anyone here ever seen the building they are doing in Dubei? another waste of money if we are all gonna be swimming soon.... Im sure these people have alot more info on global warming than we have..
Read some more. Scientist say that the "temporary" part is the cooling. That the cooling is the trend. They say that the warming will still happen and it will be much longer lasting.

Whether we are warming or cooling, we are having an huge negative impact on the earth. Many species that are going extinct are not going extinct because of the inability to cope with natural changes, but the inability to cope with negative changes we've made. One thing is perhaps honey bees...

Why do I mention these??? Because they are responsible for pollinating a great deal of our crops. I could go on and on. Frogs are also dying globally and showing alarming amounts of genetic abnormality.... You get my point.

I for one am enjoying this show!

I am an Entomologist. I just finished researching one of two species of the Hydaticus genus in Georgia. The one I am researching is a neartic species that originated in the Bahamas and Carribean. They have continually been migrating north. The reason they are is because of their oviposition. Their oviposition depends up temperate. They can and will continue to move north and oviposite sooner because of the warmer temperatures. The other species of this genus continues to move north because it over winters and there it is moving to cooler temperatures. Temperatures are increasing due to global warming. I am in no means trying to start an argument or change anyone's opinions. Believe what you want to believe. I will continue to try and help turn this around as best I can. I guess we can watch the signs and turn around or continue to try and get to Florida on 75 North. Have a great night all!

Has anyone thought about how many times NASA sends it's shuttles to outer space? Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the shuttle have to go through the ozone layer to reach space? Would that not make a pretty big hole in the ozone allowing more direct sun rays in thus making the earth warmer? Do we really need NASA so much? Why spend all the money researching Mars....anyone planning on living there? When people have trouble paying for the high price of gas, how does NASA afford the fuel? Just food for thought. Cin
It all boils down to one simple yet inconcievable problem... TOO MANY PEOPLE on the planet and until this is addressed the warming and environmental desruction will continue until nature takes over and does it for us.
Regardless of the global warming debate about our impact on the climate and the opposing views from scientist on each side of the fence there are several changes that are likely to occur as governments move to enact legislation to control the carbon footprint of our industrialized societies. We should all plan on paying significantly higher prices for gas, finished goods, food, electricity, heat, concrete, glass, steel, chemicals and the endless list of other items that are produced and are directly and/or indirectly related to CO2 government caused costs.
Producers are not going to absorb these costs and will in turn pass them on to consumers. Consumers will react by looking for cheaper prices and more goods will be imported from countries that have lower costs and possibly no CO2 related legislation. Countries such as China would be more than happy to meet our needs but at least the mess isn

HOTCPL34, Greenland may be ice, but it is indeed melting and as that fresh water enters the Atlantic and continues to change the salinity then the 600 years won't mean a thing because we will revert back into an ice age. I think we sometimes as humans think short term. 600 years is nothing in the true span of time. But then again that is another forum. ;-) lol Good contribution you two.
CINRON2, this isn't meant in a way to anger or be rude at all. Just another side and information. The hole in the ozone layer is not the same issue as Global warming. Believe it or not the ozone hole has decreased greatly because we elimited CFC's and and many chemicals that caused harm to it. The ozone layer is actually supposed to have a hole in it. The issue isn't the hole in the layer but the size of he whole. The bigger the whole the more rays that can enter. Without out the hole we would not be able to reflect most of the rays we get. Global warming on the other hand is when the heat emitted by the sun enters our atmosphere and some is absorbed while the rest is reflected. When those rays are reflected, Carbon dioxide and methane are the two main gases that actually attach to those rays and keep them here instead of reflecting them thus increasing the temperature on earth. The increase is devastating weather is a result of this change because the influx of heat changes the normal cycles. Just wanted to add that to this discussion, not to change minds but add to the topic. Have a wonderful Hump Day all and hope you get to do some humping.

I owna small retail business and like most have always had spotlights everwhere in addition to standard lighting. I have removed the spotlights in 1 store in part due to energy cost and personal concerns for our enviroment. Question is would you shop at a location that reduced the amount of lighting for energy reasons? To be clear the lighting si still equal to what you would see in your normal grocery store just no spotlights.
LOL you guys are funny... Why is it that the libral scientist are correct and any other who are now comming out and saying that global warming is false is wrong? How do you explain the factual 25/30 cycle that the weather is on? where are all these massive hurricanes that are supposed to be hitting on a regular basis now? actualy show me the cat 3 or higher that has hit the us since Katrina. If you do look back at weather history you will find the cycle I am speaking about. As a matter of fact if you do you will see that in the early seventies there was a rise in tornato activity in the US actualy coinciding with the cooling that was going on then just like right now.
Let me ask you all.. If people like me who love freedom and capitolism both of witch build a strong econamy and a strong nation are evil and wrong. What in gods name does that make you people who are actualy going to vote for a man who is a flat out lier, who with his voting record, speaches and promices will do everything in his power to bring this great nation into socialism and then communism? The man has marxist views and you people are drinking the coolaid like crasy. So I ask you once again.. If Im the bad guy who wants freedom for my children and yours. What does that make you for wanting the opposite?

I believe the earth is, indeed, warming. BUT I also believe that it is a natural cycle.
Here is why:
1.) MOST scientists who blame human behavior for global warming are only studying weather since the industrial revolution. That is such a small span of time, even if you are totally into the Christian/Jewish/Muslim thought that the earth is only a little over 5,000 years old.
2.) The very same scientists that are exclaiming "humans are ruining out planet...global warming is all man's fault" are the same exact ones who exclaimed we were heading into a new ice age in the 70's.
3.) One example of many that are available: In Dec. 2007, a British expedition in Antartica was exploring the ice shelf on the western end. They kept finding glass in the ice core samples. They could not figure out where the glass came from. They eventually figured out that there is a valcanoe under the ice shelf in Antarica on the western end.
April 2008, the very same scientists from Dec. 2007 sent a wire to London carrying word that they witnessed a piece of ice that is larger than Rhode Island break off of Antartica and float out to sea. This was blamed on carbon footprints from humans and manmade global warming.
Take a guess where the piece of ice came off from.
Come on now.
Try it.
Yep...The western end.
How is this science?
There are many more, but time and space dictate that my point is made with what is posted.
The problem with the whole idea of "green" living is that no one actually knows how to. Sure, we can go to CF lights, hell LED's are FAR more efficient than those, but no one is screaming to use them.
Ethanol is touted as the answer to our fuel needs. Corn, the number one source of commercial ethanol is only a 1.6:1 ratio of ethanol production. This means you get 1.6 units of ethanol out of 1 unit of fuel used to create it. Switchgrass is 30:1, why aren't they using switgrass? Bamboo? Other NON-FOOD items to create ethanol? Why not use something that is rapidly renewable? Look it up on Nat Geo, VERY interesting documentary about it, my numbers may be off, I am using memory, but they are in the neighborhood.
I am sorry, when more than 50% of scientists do not agree that it is man made, I cannot agree with it.
I am not going to piss away my hard earned money so that some enviro-whacko can sleep at night in his recycled t-shirt bedding.
But, hey, I never claimed to be anything but an asshole, so maybe I am wrong.

Hooligans,
I believe the answer is that there is no data for the "untrained" to draw that conclusion. There is overwhelming evidence to prove that it is happening. People that stand to lose the most money by would-be green laws, have launched propaganda campaigns to discredit the scientific proof. It appears some of the fish are biting.
Most that disagree with scientists use an argument that says that we can't prove with current benchmarks in history because we don't have enough historical data to compare past global weather trends to. I whole-heartedly agree with this point. However, we do know, <b><u>for a fact</u></b>, that cars, aerosols, factories, plastics, nuclear waste, etc. never existed and were being spewed into every environment on earth, killing off entire species and affecting DNA causing genetic defects, in turn causing lasting genetic abnormalities. Whether the planet is warming or not, we are have a huge negative impact on our environment that <u>is</u> causing health problems, depleting natural resources and destroying the environment. We still need to act regardless of whether the warming is actually happening or not.
Jim,
I've always been green, man. I come from a green state. I'll never consider shitting in/on the environment a good thing. As far as the war, I was all for toppling Saddam. We did that... Now what?? Why do we need to be there for 100 more years? So Big Oil can steal Iraqi Oil and sell it to us for 10 dollars a gallon? Fuck that.

I for one walk with my kids on the beach and pick up trash that people leave behind, I also changed all my light bulbs and turn off the lights when am not in the room, water my yard twice a week during early AM (not like others... smack in the midle of the day when it's the hottest outside and it evaporates quicker) and recycle. I never done so before but we noticed that our trash bags are less if we recycle... less plastic to the landfills
Another thing.... if people are so concerened with going green... why the hell are the prices for the going green products so much higher... I know it's a longer proccess... but you know, some of us might not be able to go all the way green...
Changing electricity to solar power is a whopping 20grand... we sure can't afford that... we do have the sun here in Florida but not the money for it......

I am only adding a comment in hopes of improving communications
1.Spelling counts. People will understand your point if you spell correctly Additional interest can be added for decent sentence structure.
2. Stay on point. If the discussion is based on economics, discussing foreign policy will alienate your followers.
3. Remember that life is a "point of view". From the point of view of the terrestrial snail, there might not be much going on in the world. After all, they have been on the earth since nearly the beginning of land based life and will surely be here long after we are gone.
Also, I have found in my limited experience discussing politics, economics, and religion, are not good ways to get laid. But, communicating well will get your dick wet.

why is it that the only thing anyone has to say about those who do not believe in global warming is that they are making money on the deal?
what about all of the "green" or (wanabe green) companies who are making a killing off of peoples fears?
it sounds a lot like Telavangelests to me.
just like most people i am ruled by the pocket book and will do what i can afford, and what works best.
just don't tell me about some actor who thinks it is all ok for them but not for everyone else.

LAYTONCPL, what else is there to say? How about they ignore scientific data. They ignore the <u>fact</u> that whether or not the planet is warming, there is still huge negative impacts on the globe that we are causing to include, but not limited to killing entire species, polluting the air and water causing disease and countless other issues. We are destroying the environment and regardless if it's <i>warming</i>, it's happening! We still need to be green. ;-)

Did you all know that viruses invade it's host and destroys until all of its resources are gone. It then moves on to find a new host to infect and destroy.
Did you also know that Homo sapiens are looking for a new home on Mars, the moon, or a space station.
1+2=P.O.E
What up Don!?
Have a great Thurday all!

1.) I believe in going Green. But lets try to do it so that the less fortunate can also afford to exist as, over time, we develop the technology to do it.
2.) I have more than three years of actual boots on ground in Iraq in OIF, and did my time in the Persian Gulf during the Storm. Can't compare the two. Two totally different wars. Yes we toppled Sadam. Have we defeated all of the terrorist that come pouring into Iraq? Not yet, but getting closer. Talk to those individuals (terrorist) first hand, I have, and you will understand why we must keep them spending their resources in Iraq, rather than allowing them to use those resources coming to the USA. I would much rather fight them in Iraq than here at home where my family is.
3.) I will be voting for McCain and not for Husan Obama. I would never vote for somebody that ignores the national anthem and refuses to put his hand over his heart and still refuses to wear the American flag lapel. I am not a racist, I prayed for Colin Powell to run. BUT I AM 100% American.

2OFUSFORFUN,
1) It is not our right to fight Al Qaeda on Iraqs soil. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. All the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. I agree in toppling Saddam Hussein. We did that. If you think you are making a dent in the amount of people that hate us and are willing to attack because we are in a country we're not suppose to be in you're being fooled.
2) These claims you make about Obama are a perfect example of how propaganda works and how easily you are manipulated into intolerance and hatred of your fellow humans by greedy warmongers that only have a wish to permanently station our troops in Iraq, change Iraqi law to allow private Oil Companies to steal their supply and take control of their oil assets.
This war is a war of religion and conquest. We have "God Fearing" Christians waging war on "evil" Muslims to steal their natural resources. All we have to do is look where the money is going to find out the answer. Who stands to gain the most money here? It's common sense. It doesn't matter how many times you've had "your boots on the ground". You are not told the reasoning behind strategy. You are a pawn as a soldier, not a chess player.
<font color="#ff0000"><b>Hopefully Everyone will watch this one:</b></font>
This is not a just occupation in Iraq. We accomplished our goals and now the only reason to stay is to continue to try and take the oil that these people are desperate to hang on to. <b>IT'S THEIRS!!!!</b> This is exactly why gas prices are going up. Big Oil wants people to be desperate. This is exactly why you are being fed the bullshit that all Muslims are evil. What else would a country with a majority of Christians do??? This is exactly why 4096 Americans have died in Iraq. Wake up!
These are the same assholes that are trying to get you to believe that this environment is not being affected. Why else do you think this is an issue that is split down the middle between Republicans and Democrats??? <b>WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING?</b>
BELNSPOONS,
I have no doubt that the planet will be here too. That's not justification to continue to destroy the species on it. Mars exists too. However... There is no life there. Even if other life marches on, here on Earth, we have a duty to ensure our survival, as humans.

Regardless if we have global warming or not, the most disturbing part of this thread is that CT is basing scientific opinion on how rich people spend their money. Being rich doesn't make you smart, being rich doesn't make you a scientist, being rich doesn't make you an expert on climate trends, being rich doesn't make you an environmental advocate... being rich makes you rich. There were alot of rich people that built amzing homes and businesses in New Orleans, so I guess that means Katrina never happened, huh? "Seems kinda crazy for multimillionaires to be throwning money out the window". Are you fucking serious? Do you know any multimillionaires? Limos, hummers? That whole idea is fucking ridiculous.
I didn't think you were implying that. I was just using your post as a spring board for another point. Your point was very valid. ;-)
