Swingers Forum - self-actualization

Previous Post Next Post
Brief intro - I (he-D, she would be C), due to many recent life events, have been on some sort of quest to find out (if you don't know what I mean you just might want to skip the rest).

I was introduced to the self-actualization concept in a psych course in the early 70's. I remember being intrigued at the time, but don't recall it having much presence in my mind since then.

Recently, I recalled SA during one of my many pondering moments. So, of course, I googled it. This was the first link I checked and have not investigated further as of this writing: http://www.performance-unlimited.com/samain.htm - it was a eureka moment for me - I had stumbled on the path for me.

I am writing this for a two-fold reason:

1) for general use - I think there are many fascinating character concepts which I think anyone would find helpful in filling out their profiles (this seems to be a common struggle)

2) personally -if anyone reading this would be interested in discussing this topic via personal email, I would certainly be interested as well

Congratulations on making the journey. You may also want to research mid-life crisis counseling. Seriously, if you are looking at Maslow, there may be other issues. You never know until you look.

As a pysch major, I had plenty of discussions of Maslow as too simplistic for the complicated human. It is a nice theory though.

One of the items of contention was the placement of Self Esteem versus Peer Acceptance (layer three). Maslow had them laid out with Self Esteem as a higher need than PA. However, PA comes much easier to an individual if they have SE.

For my own analysis, I do not rely on PA as a motivator for SE. I focus internally and make sure I meet my own SE needs. PA comes from that.
While I found that analization very intriguing, I also found it VERY sexist!! I thought at first that I was just being over anilitical, as I often am. And then I got to the Demicratic values and attitudes part and there is no reference of equality of sex! I would think that if someone really is SA, that they would realize that....

Mrs.
Maven: appreciate your thoughtful reply - understand what you are saying, but for now I'm intrigued mostly by the charcter traits put forth - my SE currently seems to be on autopilot so Im not questioning the part that seems to be purring right now. Would welcome any add'l thoughts, by email if you'd like. :) D

Hotfor: I would hope that "very sexist" is a little extreme. At worst it is an omission by the writer and at best the writer (who may be shemale) is enlightened enough to take for granted that the equality of gender is a given - I obviously don't know for sure, but why not look at the glass as half full on this one? Thanks to you also for responding to my offbeat post!
I don't mean to rain on the theories of learned people BUT.... I thought that life was about living it and not about analysing it. We can get way too deep, as average people, into trying to discover the meaning of our, mankind's, existance that we lose sight of living life as it comes at us. Leave the theory to the Phd s and from time to time read things to see what the current think is.

When I was young and looking at getting into the religion game... I was looking for the why's and wherefores and came up with some of my own theories. For example; What is truth? Truths are transitory, As knowledge increases truth changes. So what was true yesterday may not be true tomorrow. Another: Who or what is God? And some others: Who or what am I? The final one is Why this ...why anything? Guess what else I learned ..... Language and conceptual thought are the killer in answering these or any questions. Once one understands that language, by nature, is the greatest communication problem we can then go on to try to understand what words sometimes block out. A picture is worth a 1000 words or 10000 words... that's because a picture doesn't uses language. It is exactly that a representation a picture... Children learn via pictures and we keep this ability for all time in our brains.. Most basic learning device...

throbbing: once again you demonstrate to me that you have a singular intellect on this site (keeping in mind ive been here a whopping 6 weeks or whatever) - truly not sucking up to you, i swear! ;) i'm sure its unlikely we'll ever meet, but please keep your contributions coming - (i'll likely concoct a brief, private email this evening if this stupid puter holds up)
wearethrobbing made a very good reply. the only problem there is there are WAY to many people that do not, will not, cannot think, for themselves or anyone else. Nietzsche is disgustingly correct. There are to many people looking for some one to tell them how to live, what to think, etc.
I agree THROB, atheism is a great start.
