It was brought to my attention that it might be a good idea, on my website's reservation page, to allow a guest to make a donation via the web using a sevice like CCbill or paypal. What is y'alls opinion?
I would not do that...WAY to easy to be ripped off...
Just my $0.02

Remember, Donations usually means the funds go to a non profit charity. So if the money is going to you for expenses and profit, it is a charge or service fee, not a donation. So if you are taking donations, what charitable organization are the funds going to???
Call your charity "The care of swingers" Fund. You don't have to justify the charity, only show a user-base that is interested in donating. If you are the one "taking care", all proceeds can go to you, since you are the one providing/ensuring their care. The money can be used in any manner that coincides with "the care of swingers" to include your compensation for working toward the care of swingers. The beauty of it is, you can even file for tax exempt status, save the income portion that goes to you and your staff for their work. If a church can do it, so can you.

Donation: 1 contribution: a voluntary gift (as of money or service or ideas) made to some worthwhile cause
2 contribution: act of giving in common with others for a common purpose especially to a charity
I have to disagree with you Don. A friend of mine threw a party (not a swinger party) and asked for "donations", basically for the food, drinks, cleanup, and to make a little extra cash. Law enforcement arrived and simply asked what charity the donations were going to. Since he could not answer this, he was brought up on charges of Misappropriation of funds, embezzlement, and racketeering, & alcohol consumption on premises without a liquor license.
So everyone be cautious on how you word things!

That's what I'm saying. Word it the way I tell ya and it'll work. The cause can be whatever a group of donators feels is "worthwhile". I sure as fuck don't think Church is "worthwhile", but yet they take donations every month to upkeep their buildings and pay their staff. Anything else would be double standard.
It doesn't have to be a recognized charity. If that were the case, most of the media in Utah, Oregon and every other state I've lived, would be up on the same charges for taking donations for families that have been in house fires, family deaths or other losses. These are not registed "non-profit" organizations. All you have to do is create a memberbase with signatures that agree to what local organized charity it's going to. That they understand the intent of the money. Remember, the prosecution has the burden of proof. They have to show that you knowingly and willfully tried to dupe people out of their money. If they understand what the money is being used for, the money can be used for whatever purpose it is intended. This includes providing a haven or a means of support for a group that is misunderstood by mainstream society. Your buddy got busted because he was ill-prepared.

I'm no lawyer but the motorcycle clubs here in Florida just about all have club houses. All recieve donations for beer and mixed drinks, along with other items such as t-shirts and stickers.Law enforcement knows this and none have been buted that I am aware of.No charities involved.
the donations are used for the club and its members only. I do not take a salary from it nor do I use them for personal gain (except the hottub on occassion).

When my beloved and I started this club it was for one purpose and that was to fill a need that was desparately needed here in east Florida. It is our hope to actually one day become a not for profit organization and to serve this community even more.
On a personal note, Rose if you and your other half are ever in florida consider yourself as having a place to stay and if you wish a party to enjoy.
