damn, while it is funny it is not very open minded.....

Thought, great pictures....
The population of the United States was formed with people from many countries and with diverse muliticultral backgrounds. History has defined us, we are a "melting pot" a mulitcultural mix. People have migrated/ immigrated to this country for our strong ecomony and mulitude of opportunity. Why judge those who haven't learned English? (Not assuming any specific ethnicity) An example:
The hispanic population specifically has tremendous impact on our ecomony and has strong purchase power, that should not be underestimated. Learning to adapt to one another is critical. In my opinion, we should all be given an education beginning in grade school that includes a second language. Because of our close proximity to Mexico, learning Spanish can be as important for us, as learning English is for others. Open your eyes, step out of that paradigm box.
Well-said HOTSANDY, the U.S. is very much a melting pot, and many of us can trace non-Native American roots back to immigrants.

You can't dispute the purchasing power of the ever-growing Hispanic community in our nation; just take a look at the increasing amount of spanish appearing on labels of products you use regularly. Shampoo, food, electronics, and let's not forget the fact that in many major "American" grocery retailers, there are bilingual signs appearing in not only the "ehtnic" food aisles...but throughout the entire store.

:)
I agree well said HOTSANDY!

Also on the point that THOUGHTGARDEN brought up; there is more to promoting products in Spanish than just accommodating those that can't speak English, but there is a certain comfort level for those that speak Spanish as their native language. A customer that feels more confident in their shopping experience is more than likely to return to that establishment.

As far as JIMRNJANN goes - ignorance is a very ugly trait
FLCPL, don't want to ruffle feathers but I am guessing that company has elected to do all of their customer service off shore and their operators/vendors can only communicate in their native tongue and english. Most large companies who do provide spanish speaking representatives have to keep those services on shore.
Simply a matter of economics and availability.
Well maybe I am ignorant or whatever but I feel that in order to Work/Live and/or become a Citizen oh the US you should be required to lean to read and write the English language

Yea yea I know the whole
Quite frankly, I am impressed with individuals who can come from another county and learn English, even enough to get by. I have tried and tried to learn Spanish and fail miserably each time (yes, I am college educated.) I deal with Spanish lineage on a daily basis and they speak more English than I speak Spanish/Mexican/Castellano.

These people come here to a much different place, work their asses off, and learn English along the way. Perhaps those that don't like hearing, "Esprese Numero Dos por Espanol", need to examine their own work ethic. Frankly, these immigrants are increasing our work ethic moreso than any other culture has in the past 200 years.

On the other side of the equation, TR (no, not Tequila Rose but Theodore Roosevelt (couldn't help doing that!:) )) said, ""In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." In a letter to the American Defense Society 1919.

Hey Everyone,

I can tell you that completely support legal immigration from everywhere all of us at some point in our lineage were immigrants, but anyone who thinks that our borders should be wide open to anyone who wants to cross them, should spend one 24 hour shift with me in the ER...it has become the primary health care facility for illegal immigrants, and yes, I have had to learn other languages to communicate with patients...before you jump the gun to "label" another person look around at reality...walk a mile in somone elses shoes...I saw my first case of TB over the holiday weekend...thank God I was wearing the proper safety precautions...and this person sat in the waiting room for 9 hours with other patients...remember that when you or your child that has a broken arm has to wait 4 hours or more to be seen.

yes tempted and stupid is worse. the medical person from texas has it right. a friend in calif. told me that the health issue out there is completely out of control. the post opening is right and isn't ugly. i am sick of political correctness and people who promote it.
I am fine with others cultures and languages. What I am not fine with are those from other countries who refuse to learn the designated language of the country they are visiting or living in. At least to communicate with those who speak the designated language of that country. Most immagrants are pretty good about at least trying to learn a different language but there are others where a good majority of the people simply refuse to try, and think they need to be catered to. I know this because of personal experience and they have flat out told me this. I have had to learn different languages to deal with these lazy asses on a daily baises and it pisses me off. Hell would freeze over before they would do that for me if I was in their country. Plus if I stayed too long in their country without permission I would find myself in jail which is far less luxurious then the ones we have here! ok I'm done and need to go take a cold shower! ~M~
I loved it JIMRNJANN, I have a hard time understanding the person when I do press 1 for English, I thought that was funny and I have a VERY open mind....lmao:p
FLATLANDER, it
temp-being politacally correct is ignorant and if your "wife" is legal good for her,
shit we will both learn spanish if thats what it takes temp!! :)
I wonder how many people here (born in the U.S. and American Citizens) know multiple languages. If you do, why did you learn?
Was it from parents who spoke multiple languages, perhaps immigrant parents?

I've always thought it odd that the U.S. is one of the only nations with an educational system that does NOT require students to learn (fluently...not just ordering in food in restaurants) at least 1 additional language.

Do we think it's because our language, our culture is superior?

Let's review that in, say, a couple hundred years. My bet is English will no longer be the Lingua Franca and the U.S. may well be a footnote in history...if things continue the way they're going.

Let me play the devil's advocate. KT, Mexico doesn't require it either. I am all for broadening ones mind by learning more languages. However, does it make sense to come to a country and demand respect, jobs, that people speak your language, that people spend tons of money on making extra media in your language and the countless other injustices, like paying extra taxes to pay for the effort of preventing illegal entry into the country, all because people don't want to apply for citizenship. The last time I checked the United States Language is English.

Additionally, why are we not made to learn Vietnamese, Chinese, Tongan, Japanese, African Dialects etc. Why do we cater to the Mexican people? Sure they are our close neighbors, but we are also theirs. Why do we, the ones offering hope to those in poverty, need to change to adopt their language as a 2nd language. Shouldn't they, if they want the American Dream to happen, do what it takes to make it happen? Nobody owes anyone shit. It's up to them to seize the opportunity this country has to offer, it's not our job as U.S. citizens to hand it to them.

I am all for anyone coming here and making the American Dream happen, but do it like you are suppose to. There are rules. You are in the U.S. do what the U.S. citizens do. I have nothing against Mexicans and share native heritage with them, as I am Native American as well as Greek. Like them, I am half Native American and half Mediterranean. I do not expect everyone to speak Chinookan even though my people were here well before the English, Irish, French, African & Chinese were. I also do not expect everyone to know Greek. The English settled this land and are the founders of this nation. When the Natives were here, there was no nation only nomads with no claim.

So, in closing, I would like to say that I think when Mexico requires it's people to speak English in Mexico, only then should we be made to learn and speak Spanish here in the States. It's only fair. Oh and please remember, this is only one perspective. I see both sides of this debate and recognize both have very valid point.

As a child of 2 immigrants from 2 different countries, I can tell you this:

1.) BOTH parents had to learn American, as we do not speak English, we butchered it, not unlike the Latin Americans did to Spanish.

2.) I do NOT speak either language from my parents homelands, as, "We are in America, we speak English now!"

3.) Spanish, as it is taught in the American school systems, both primary and secondary, is a peasants' language.

4.) American is the language of the wealthy AND business across the world.

Why would you desire to learn the language of peasants? So you can be the head of a lawn care crew? a construction crew? a kitchen staff? Not that there is anything wrong with these jobs, they all need someone to do them, they all need the leader of the staffs, HOWEVER, the goal of Americans is to better ourselves, NOT to be the bottom rung's leader.

I have lived in numerous countries, not just travelled through the touristy sections, ALL of the tourist sections have numerous people who speak English, NOT American, aside from those you get to through cruises, they speak American.

When you go to that country, you bring your English/_________ book and ATTEMPT to speak their language. They will also attempt to speak yours. Through the course of my military career, I learned languages that were not very useful in the business world at that time, however, the business climate has changed, and I have language skills that are desirable to business.

For the record, if you do business in other countries, they speak, read, and write English. It is the international language, THAT is why they have the signs and such. WE SPEND MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE! There are businesses all over the world who do not conduct ANY business in any language but English. WHat language is REQUIRED of ALL pilots? ENGLISH!

Do I feel for the poor bastards who come here from their home to do a job we won't do, for a wage we wouldn't do it for? YES...How horrible must it be at their homeland to abandon it all. BUT every immigrant explosion has been at the bottom of the pile, they learn the language, they begin to get educated, and they assimulate, THEN they come up from the bottom! It happened to the Irish, Italians, Germans, and now, the Latins. The only mass migration that did not START at the bottom was the Former Soviet Union peoples, why? They learned English before they came!
My observation from being outside is that if you are in a large metro area, you probably will get by with the signs there. However, if you are not, sometimes there are signs, sometimes not. Luck of the draw. Sometimes you will find someone who can speak your language, sometimes you have to piss in the tree at the airport (BTDT) because you couldn't find an english speaker in time and it was late at night.

My take on it is this. If I am in your country, it is MY JOB to learn the language that helps me get along. It is NOT your responsibility to make it so I can get along. Did I enjoy pissing behind the potted plant? No. I didn't speak the language. MY FAULT not their's.
