You should always designate a driver when going out drinking. Why should this weekend be different than any other. Because you may get caught?

Driving Drunk is just stupid.
Agreed Drew.

Is this why you and I always end up being DD's?

Oh wait...that implies I have brains...hmmmm. Lemme get back to you on that.

Seriously though...everyone play safe and smart this weekend.

really Its just stupid to drive unsafely. If they had a standardized test for driving while talking on a cell phone, eating, reading, or just plain shitty drivers, driving after having a couple of beers may not be an offense that would land you in jail. yea yea i know almost half of all auto accidents involve alcohol, but what about the other half. I always drive safe (well almost), for me its about not getting caught. I have been driving for 37 years accident free and my driving drunk days are long gone>

The tiny state of Rhode Island still ranks rock bottom in terms of driving knowledge, according to a national test conducted by GMAC Insurance. Oregon drivers answered the most questions correctly.

The test revealed that about one in 11 licensed drivers in the United States would fail a state drivers test, according to GMAC Insurance.

Rhode Island ranked last year, also, with an average score of 77. Last year, Oregon's average score was 89, which still placed at the top of the rankings that year.

Based on average scores, northwestern states generally ranked highest while the bottom-ranking states were mostly in the northeast. One exception was Vermont, which ranked third. Washington state drivers ranked second. Drivers in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia ranked at the bottom, with D.C. finishing just ahead of Rhode Island.

The 20-question test was based on questions asked in state driver's license examinations. A score of 70 or higher is required to pass a standard state test.

The failure rate for drivers in northeastern states was about 16 percent, according to GMAC Insurance. The failure rate for drivers in northwestern states was from one to seven percent.

The test and an accompanying survey were completed by 5,288 licensed drivers including at least 100 from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The survey asked about responses to specific driving situations.

Approximately one in three drivers said they usually do not stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. At least one out of five drivers did not know that pedestrians in a crosswalk have the right of way. At least one in five also did not know that roads are most slippery when it first starts to rain after a dry spell.

These are the rankings and average scores for each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia in the GMAC Insurance driving test.

Average: 83.7 percent

I drive at least 100 miles per day and have never been at fault in an accident.

I missed my renewal date by two days and had to take the written test last year. It was open book and I had to look up nearly every question.

I got 77%.
I am amazed Florida is only in 40th place..come here and drive, you would also imagine it to be in 500 plae as other countries who do not read or write English would be able to do the test better, at least you get that impression frm the drivers...
As recent victims of a rear end hit by a drunk 70 year old woman here in Florida we appreciate the friendly reminder. We would not wish the pain on anyone.
I am permanently disabled from a vehicle accident here in Utah. I was stopped on the freeway behind traffic that was halted due to debris being cleared from the roadway, by Utah Highway Patrol, when a semi truck hit me at freeway speed (estimated at 64 mph). Apparently the 50+ year old driver's attention was being occupied by his 23 year old female passenger. Needless to say, according to several witnesses, My Toyota Tacoma, with both my 14 year old daughter and I inside, barrel rolled 2 times in the air and rolled 4-5 more times across three lanes, then down into the median, where it rested on it's roof and I lay unconscious partially ejected from the vehicle. I woke up in the hospital with a complex concussion and cervical spine injury. I've earned the right to say that Utah driver suck. Don't just be careful on the holiday, beware at all times.

P.S. SHEKKI, you're one of the lucky ones eh? LOL!
Damn, that sucks and you seem like such a good guy. Sometimes bad stuff happens to good people and I will never understand why. Dare I ask how your daughter made out? Your story is proof that when you leave the house and get on the road there is no guarantee you will make it home again.

:o
Is your daughter okay? The passenger seat is usually the most dangerous spot in the car. It's screwed up what happened - I used to drive every day to work in SLC. I literally wonder each time if I'm going to die on that trip. It's as if i-15 attracts some incredible force of stupidity!

Your story reminded me of that - thanks for you sharing your experience, I imagine it must've been incredibly hard beyond words to deal with what you had to deal with.

Edit:
Damnit! you beat me to the question! (Good thing I'm not the only one wondering.)
My daughter suffered whiplash and nightmares because she was conscious for the whole ordeal and she thought, at first, that I had died because I wasn't moving and other people were trying to keep her away from me just in case I was dead.

According to the police report, the semi hit me so hard that it shoved the load through the front of the trailer hard enough to bulge it outward.
