It's important to remember that when you customize a profile?
Don't pick a background image that makes the words hard to read. If you must use a background image, use transparency (in a program like photoshop, paintshop, etc.) to fade out the background image so it's still visible but NOT overwhelming.
There are a lot of sites that will help you choose complimentary colors (color theory) that work well together.

If you want to take a serious stab at the CSS code, here's a couple of tutorials.

But the best idea of all is to just do it, then have some people who you trust...who will not blow sunshine up your ass - give you an honest opinion. And promise them not to take their opinion personally if they don't like it. It's just a web page...and it can always be tweaked until done!

We did make our font slightly larger than normal so that no one can cay they couldn't see it.

I agree...some of the profiles look really awesome, however it does make it difficult to read some of their "about us" "what we are looking for" etc. I like the customized profile option (although, I have no clue how the programming works in order to do it), but we just needta make sure ppl can read it.

I think that people will be successful or un-successful as a result of their own actions in swinging as in any other part of their life. If they choose to do things that make it hard to read, I also see no harm in telling them, "I had a really hard time reading your profile". It is constructive criticism and nothing more. If they choose to not agree, who cares.
I don't think they were directing that comment towards someone in particular, just a general reference in letting someone who has a difficult profile to read know that it is so.
YES.... the profiles are hard to read.......... its ok to have a background picture, but if the writeing is not is a colored box of its own. its hard to read..... dose that make sence???
thats we have not uped are profile..... just left it simple

There is a simple solution for those with content in front of a busy background. All you have to do is make the table cell background semi-opaque. That way you can still see the background, yet also read the text in the cell.
