Well I use Line app very similar to Kik very private as well and a very good solution I use it for gaming

iMessages between iPhones are end to end encrypted, but the apps are good if you want to stay anonymous.
They should bring the chat room back on here

GroupMe is looking like a suitable replacement.
If you want to stay anonymous, I recommend Mewe or discord. If you want encryption, and you don't mind giving out your phone number, WhatsApp or Line.
Personally I prefer Discord. It has the ability to set up many rooms and do voice and video chat if you want. Lots of users too.

I don’t feel a requirement for end to end encryptions necessary for our purposes...but I do like an app that doesn’t require giving out your actual phone number. I’ve been using Slack for various other purposes and it may work nicely. It supports group and invite-only rooms and direct messaging. Best of all you can set it up with an invite link so you don’t expose any personal information.

The problem with the chat here is that, historically, it was a massive battery drain; especially if you downloaded the app version. I remember going from having my phone last all day to a max of 5 hours.
Most of what’s out there (WhatsApp, Viber, Telegram, MeWe etc) requires you to give out your personal phone number or Facebook and/or isn’t encrypted or has data tracking. Lots of people from various communities have been researching today. We’re switching to one called Threema.
The highlights: No ads. No data tracking. No email/phone number. End to end encryption. (Not even stored on the servers, which are in Switzerland!) Secret groups. Timed deletion of messages. Pics. Videos. Voice calls and messages. File sharing. QR code device verification
The downside: it costs $3 (for life). And obviously isn’t as well known or widespread as kik.

The Threema app that Full Frontal mentions does seem to be good, but many people are wanting something free that they can make annonymous connection to someone they want to sext with or maybe meet for play. I am not sure that end to end security matters as much to most as does annonymity.
For that reason I would still say that Telegram is a great option. Free and you only need to use your ph number for sign up purposes. The app then only needs your user name for someone to contact you, just like KIK.
So message on people. And if anyone feels like trying out some Telegram sexting to see if it fits your needs, I am a willing test participant, lol.

FYI MeWe asks for your number when you sign up, but there's a button that lets you use your email address. It appears to be the most popular place people are going nationally, it's just a lot more than a chat app.
