Use both Adaware as well as Spybot S&D 1.4 both free and avaiable at all the reputable download sites. I also adjust my setting to accept first party cookies only and to prompt me on third party cookies.
This is NOT adware or Spyware, It's a worm.

well I am using Opera as my web browser, spybot and adaware. But also have norton systemworks 2006 amongst other protection. Opera is a great little program becasue it wouldn't open it and when it took too long i just shut that window down and started deleting all the others. But this is 1st time I've had a security issue with yahoo.... hope everyone kills this one dead
An excellent Antivirus program is Grisoft's AVG. You can get it at www.getavgnow.com .
First of all, let me say that *anyone* who tells you that the Unix derivatives (especially Mac OSes) are not susceptible to viruses and the like...well, due respect, that's a complete crock of shit. I'm sick and tired of Mac people acting like their machines are perfect - far from it. It's nothing more than a marketing ploy, and it's always annoyed people who really know better.
And, in fact, they've had far more stability problems in the past few OSes than ever before. Why? For the same reasons, essentially, that Windows does. The only reason they've not had the enormous problems Windows has is because they (the Mac platforms) only command a tiny percentage of the personal computer market.
It's simple, really: No one's going to bother writing code for something they know will never be used on 98%+ of all the machines out there.
But make no mistake: ANY computer that runs executable program files is EQUALLY SUSCEPTIBLE to malicious code as any other, period.
Of course, it's only my opinion, but you can bet your sweet ass it's backed up by decades of industry experience and expertise.
That having been said, there are some very good recommendations above: Adaware SE, Spybot Search&Destroy, and the AVG Antivirus are all *very* good, perfectly legitimate, and FREE programs (not shareware or demos), all offer routine updates (the core of a good malware defense strategy), and all are proven reliable and effective over several years by many professional-level users.
By the way...the single most common source of malware intrusions is plain old lack of discrimination and judgment when browsing, using email, etc. Always has been, always will be. The people who produce this garbage know this; in fact, they count on it. So, use the Antivirus and AntiSpyware programs, firewalls, whatever else, sure...but the soundest advice has always been to be careful of where you go and what you do (online and off)!
Good luck out there.

evening everyone,
I work as a security specialist for a large company and used to be a firewall engeneer for symantec. as far as macs yes there are some viruses that were written for them and with macs moving into the windows world you will see more in the future. this one though was tageted at windows vulnerabilities not macs or bsd or linux. The best protection is a multi layered approach. 1st use a gateway route/firewall combo for some basic protection (linksys wrt54g) or likewise. 2nd get a client firewall software, symantec client firewall, mcafee or even zone alarm pro. the third is an anti-virus program as long as you have one of the big 4 symantc, mcafee, trend or panda you should be all right, the most important thing about your anti-virus software is to keep the virus signatures updated and to do manual scans on at least a weekly basis. I hope this helps keep everyone safe. just think of av like a condom for your computer it is best to have one if ya dont want to catch something. and yess i know condoms arent 100% effective but hey niether is av software. but you have beter chances with it than without.
