My husband has served in the USMC before we were married. Both my husband and I have been in Public Safety. (Him in the Fire Service and I in Law Enforcement and later attorney.) We have first hand knowledge of the sacrifices we and other Americans in uniform give. We speak as one (and it looks like others) in our Pride we have for our Nation. Under God and will do everything to fight for the rights of all who share in our ideals.

For those who don

To all the men & women that have served this country thank you for giving me the right to serve this great nation also. To all those that have a problem with my brothers & sisters in arms just try to remember the stuff you were taught in History, if it wasn't for us you could be speeking German, Japanese, Italian, Aribic or English with a twist.

I can't thank you guys enough for all that you have done for us. I have countless vets and active military in my family and frienships. You guys ROCK!!!

I'd like to make a distinction here, if I might.

I'm always a little disappointed when I read about Veterans on Memorial Day. Not to find fault, at all, mind you - but let me explain...

I'm as grateful as anyone for our Veterans; the people who served (and still do) every day to defend our way of life. They are, without questions, this nation's very best.

I was one of them, and my wife...so we know the very special sacrifices that every Veteran makes; every Veteran's family makes...

But, remember: we have a day, just for remembering those people: It's November the 11th, and while it started out being called 'Armistice Day', it is now called 'Veterans Day'. That, my friends, is the day to show how much you appreciate what those people do.

But what of today? What about Memorial Day?

Well, as an honorably discharged Veteran, and a military brat...I'm very glad you all feel so proud, and I'd trade nothing for the privilege of serving this country as I did.

But Memorial Day's not for me.

In spite of anything I may have done for this country - regardless of whatever sacrifice I may have made...I did not pay the price that Memorial Day is intended to honor.

I wrote a poem, and I hope you can understand the meaning...

Sir and I use that term loosely, you obvesely have no clue what the F' your speaking about and I can't help but think you are quite possible a F'in Democrat. It's only fair to assume (and we all know what that means) that you don't believe in anything George Bush or any other Rep. has to say. We have to agree with the rest that you TRUELY do not UNDERSTAND what you really have because of people like myself who go to work everyday in the MILITARY. We may not DIRECTLY save your life but when some asshole like on the day of 9-11 comes knocking on your door I am sure you will again be one of the first to cuss us again because we're NOT THERE to save your ASS. Don Juan, you are very wrong. People like u that say I pay my taxes that pay your wages. Guess what, for the past 17 years I've been paying taxes too. Just because our pay comes out of taxes doesn't make u my boss. Teachers, Soldiers, Sailors, Police, Firemen, EMT's. We all pay taxes. And too bad to say, Police, Soldiers, Sailors, EMT's, and Marines don't have a choice on who we protect or save.

Memorial day is to remind the public to remember those that fell in the line of duty. Those that gave the greatest sacrafice for this country. It doesn't matter what war, or the reason. They served this country and lost their life doing it. It shows in all the military's core values. Honor is always first. So honor the fallen, don't disgrace them.

We dont see anything jingoistic or manipulative about the song.

I joined the United States Air Force by my own will.
I joined after I thought long and hard about spending years of my life dedicated to something other than myself.
I decided that I do love the freedoms that have and I am willing to make sure they stay that way.
Noone decided this for me, I am not mindless, I am educated,and I am a member of mensa.

Not every war has to be fought on American soil to have a pure purpose.

DJQ, you have the ability to not only work and pay your bills, feed yourself, acquire material posessions(including the computer you make your posts on), and you have the right to your opinion. All of these things are possible because of a country, however flawed, that stands up for what it feels is right. I'm willing to bet that ANY number foreign nationals would love to trade places with you right now.

When you put your own self needs away for a short moment and realize, like so many post before mine have said, there are families without fathers and mothers because they fought for something bigger than themselves, we, you and I, are not that important in the grand scheme of things. Young men and women, some as young as 18 years of age, are sleeping in tents, eating food from plastic bags, and waiting for the next mortar round to hit nearby, because they were asked too. Many of whom probably do not agree with their situation, but realize that they are their, giving of themselves for a greater good.

These people deserve at the very least a soft thank you once a year. DJQ, you are intitled to your opinion, no one will force you to believe something else like the days of inquisition. But please, for all those who have given of themselves, past and current, have just a shred of decency and gratitude that you are able to live the life you have. I'm not telling you to believe the same way I do, opposing sides is part of what makes this country great, just dont take for granted the things that were given to you without expectation of repayment.

HAving been on the sideline and reading the responses from Don I am compelled to say a thing or two. I for one do not expect anyone to kiss my ass for my having served. Yes I do admit that I worked for those paying taxes and did so freely and of my choice. See I was raised to believe that a person should get over themself and be a part of something that is for the betterment of others. I made the free and conscious decision to serve this country and its people in the service. I have served through at least five of the armed conflicts this country has been part of. Do I expect some genuflection or ass kissing no. Would I expect some respect for what I have done? No I guess I don't expect it. I do appreciate it when it happens but at the same time realize there are those who would make light of it or even as Don seems to do speak disparagingly of it. I guess I find it disconcerting that he supposed served in the Navy and still didn't come away with any greater appreciation of the sacrafices those in uniform make whether in combat or in a support role. If he wants to rant and be a legend in his own mind he is entitled to that. I am just saddened that he has so little respect for others that he would offend people and spout belittlements for people who choose to blieve in something other than themselves. To those who posted negative comments to Don I do appreciate how you can feel so angered as to bring you to want to use bodily harm to shut him up or make a post that will shut him up. At the same time I have to say it is like a phrase my grandfather used to say. "Don't try to teach a pig to sing. It only frustrates you and annoys the pic".
