OK, is it me, or is the Federal standard, Body Mass Index, a load of crap?

I just calculated my BMI and it told me I was overweight. I don't want to sound conceited, but I stand 6'2" and weigh 202 pounds. I am muscular and have a body fat percentage of 13%. But the BMI says I am overweight? Who are they modeling this thing on? Calista Flockheart?

Anyone else have similar experiences?

I've been saying that for years! It's ridiculous.

When our oldest was in KG the school did a check on the studemts and compared them against the charts and said that our scarecrow looking child was overweight. I don't know what the hell that dumbass school was doing checking in the first place. But our rail thin KG child came home very upset because they started telling him he needed to change it lower or (insert fav illness here) was going to happen to him and anyone else he knew who wasn't right by the chart would suffer the same fate. After I got done preventing my wife's immediate departure for someone's near death experience and then lowered my own blood pressure I determined that there was but one thing left to do after making sure he understood they made a big mistake. To prevent yet another problem from that school already on our sh**-list for other stupid stuff..... we moved. That's just the biggest crime from that chart among our personal experience. I have more.... but that should be enough.

So, I agree whole heartily. That chart is messed up and is doing a lot of damage to people who believe it to be accurate.

From what I understand they came up with the BMI standards from the New York metropolitan life standards from 1967. These same standards are also used for the military. I had a good friend of mine who was chased out of the military for being over weight. The sad part is that the commander who kicked him out looked like he was 4 months pregnant but was under the weight limits. My friend who was kicked out had a body fat of about 6%. In fact on the last weekend of his military career he won the Mr. Southern California body building contest.

Seems this BMI and the NEw York Met Life standards do not take into account that each generation is successivelyh larger. When I was in high schools the football offensive linemen averaged about 160-180 pounds. Now many are almost 300. And we are not saying fat.

Was told by my Doc that the insurance companies came up with the charts on your height and weight...I stand 5'9 and weigh 178...according to their so called charts i am as well as some others i see that have posted on this subject over weight as well...their chart says i should be 168...hell i am about skin and bones now...
The BMI thingie is not acurate. I believe there's a new version that is made to be more acurate. I forget. In my health class I learned the average fat percentage for males is like 8-10% (I could be off on the male one), while for females it's suppossed to be 13-18%. (For the average height, build, etc.) According to that AND the BMI, I am hugely underweight. I'm like 7% body fat or something like that. My BMI is 17.7 (Which is hugely underweight as well, but I can't remember the average basis of that one). I dunno. It doesn't caculate the fact that I'm short, small boned, narrow, and have a abnormally high metabolism. So yeah. I think if you look good, you look good, and vice versa...the end. That's my shpill on this one. :D
BMI (Body mass index) is a correlation between height and weight with a set ratio. It has no bearing on body composition (body fat% - muscle / fat ratio) lipid levels (cholesterol)or metabolic consumption (VO2 MAX) BMI is a guideline and not the best way to calculate health. If this substandard chart is still being held as the benchmark it is a great injustice to most who are rejected for false health assessments. The best standard for health now is the VO2 max test that assesses your volume of oxygen consumption with you heart rate and energy output. Ask your health club owner or doctor about it.
