I've been in and out of NC for the last 13 years, and from my experience, if you are looking at those two cities, go for Raleigh or its neighbors Cary or Chapel Hill. Charlotte has had a lot of problems with crime and all other sorts of things. Raleigh doesn't have as much, although its other neighbor Durham does.
Hello, Both cities are like most big cities around the country... Charlotte is more the industrialized and the Raleigh Durham is more the R&D area... So it really depends on what you do for a living or wish to do for a living which area is best.. You can contact me on Yahoo IM if you wish.. tarheals4fun .. I would say that both areas have their plusses and their negatives... and it all depends on what you are used to and what you do for a living. ...

If you don't work and are independently wealthy.. I have some investment oportunities for you...LOL.. Just kidding.
We lived in Charlotte for 8 years before we left a couple years ago. We still have ties there.
In Charlotte, the southeast side, Matthews, is where everyone wants to live now. Charlotte has VERY high taxes. Crime is high there, especially the west and east ends. Traffic is very bad as are all the yankees who moved there in droves. As far as work goes your limited. You have the insurance business, banking, health care and sales. Blue collar workers are losing jobs very fast. The state of North Carolina in general is not so great in my opinion. If there is a way to bleed you for taxes and fees that state has done it. Charlotte has a very high immigrant population, some of which is causing great troubles, especially the asian gangs.
If I were to pick a place in North Carolina it would be the Raliegh/Cary area. As for us, we would NEVER return to North Carolina.
As a native charlottean, I will have to disagree in earnest to the above account of Charlotte and NC in general. Granted any growing city will have it's share of problems and I have traveled and lived in different parts of the country and I always find myself coming right back here. You will find for the most part most will be very friendly and hospitible, you will encounter the occasional grumpy soul and usually they are a transplant lol. As far as what part of the city it really depends on what you are looking for. Downtown you are right in the middle of the nightlife and going ons, South Charlotte is where the old money is so that is a coveted address for want-to-be types, Lake Norman area is self explanitory it is where the new money is and lake dwellers, and the university area is just starting to grow with leaps and bounds enddless possibilties in this area with the new Bio Tech campus going in and the racing industry mostly in this area. Come spend a few days and absorb.
