Swingers Forum - STI/STD - What Do You Do?

I'm not going to run through the standard stuff about protection, caution, and testing. Everyone has heard those things a zillion times, and everyone can and has made their own decisions, what they felt was right for them, about that topic.

I am, rather, because of a recent post, one which is still showing up, going to talk about what one does if he/she contracts an STI/STD. This will be just my opinion, and I'm certainly not an expert, not a doctor or an RN, but I am a certified medical type, do have some knowledge, and can apply common sense and common courtesy to a situation.

First, one thing I never hear mentioned is washing. It's a good idea to wash and, if you're a woman, douche as soon as is practical after sex. NOTE: NOT a "normal" douche, no "products", vinegar, or anything like that, just warm water, and only if you had sex without a condom, so there's seminal fluid left behind. Thanks to Tougirl, I just did some checking, and women who douche "regularly" have more problems than those that don't, and the lady nurse who told me this DID say only water, nothing else, which I originally forgot to say. But it does seem to make sense, the longer a germ or a virus stays on your body, the more chance it has to get into your system. This is especially true for women, who are somewhat more susceptible to things than are men because the little beasties are usually inside them, and have a better chance and more time to get through membranes and into the blood. And some things can even infect the membranes themselves, so removing or minimizing left-behinds would seem sensible. So I'll leave this in as a suggestion, with the caveats of ONLY warm water, and ONLY if you had unprotected sex, but if you have any doubts, please check with a doctor first. The lady who told me that WAS an expert, but it was also like 15 years ago, and maybe what was thought to be a good idea then isn't anymore.

If you ever notice anything strange, anything unusual, odd, or new, in, on, or around your genitals, get to the doctor and get examined and tested. Again, this is especially true for women, because the signs, especially the early ones, of many STDs in women are internal, and not easily noticeable. So ANYTHING that seems odd is worth a trip to the doctor, just to be safe.

So you've noticed something suspicious, immediately stopped having sex (I hope), gone to the doctor, and been told you've acquired an STD. What do you do now? I mean, except to get treated and continue abstaining from sex until your doctor tells you that you are completely cured and no longer infectious.

Your first reaction will probably be to try to figure out who gave it to you, which is something you'll need to do. But you also need to ask the doctor how long you have been infectious, and contact anyone with whom you've had sex during that period, and tell them they need to get tested. I know that will be embarrassing, but it is the sign of a responsible person who cares about others. Also, you might not even have to do it yourself. In some states, it's a matter of law, and the doctor will take a list of your sexual partners and the health department will contact them, tell them they've been exposed to something (without mentioning your name) and advise them to get checked. That list will probably include whoever you acquired the thing from, and if it does you won't need to do anything else. However, some people will want to deal with whoever gave it to them directly, hopefully out of concern rather than vindictiveness as we have seen at least one person do.

If you do that, first, please do not assume that the person knew he or she was infected and knowingly going around spreading it. The chances are very small that that was the case. He or she probably had no idea. What's more, he or she got it by having sex, and so did you, so do not blame him/her, you have just as much responsibility for the situation as he/she does.

Once you've spoken with the person, you really shouldn't do anything else, unless he or she refuses to deal with it and continues having sex. Then, and ONLY then, will you be justified in "outing" the person if he/she is part of a community whose members indulge in sex with each other. He or she will have become a clear danger to that community, and people need to know in order to avoid that danger. But even then the person's username is sufficient. Publicizing his or her real name is nothing but vindictiveness, an attempt to punish someone for having acquired an STD, which he or she acquired in the same way you did. Are you going to publish your own real name, too? I doubt it. We are all supposed to be adults here, and it is disgusting to see someone acting like a butt-hurt 5 year old. ~ Terry

I hope you are kidding about douching! Douching can only make things worse not better. Not 100% sure what certification you have but it obviously doesn't include women's health.

Not. I don't mean summer's eve and other crap that is, at least some say, not very good for women, and more of a marketing scam than anything else. Just a light one with water, to remove seminal fluids, which, if there are any germs or viruses, contain them. No some heavy or chemical thing that also removes the natural things that are supposed to be there. And I was told that by an RN Nurse-Practitioner who worked in a women's health center, which is why I believe it's a good idea. And you're right, I don't know enough about that particular topic to try to argue that I'm right and someone else is wrong, not having even read any of the research one way or another, that's why I said I'm not a doctor or an RN.
We've found that the best thing to do if you think you might have been exposed to an STI is to invoke the name of whichever underworld demon you normally pray to, light a while bunch of candles and sacrifice a live chicken (Goats are preferable but they make a MUCH bigger mess...and have you priced them lately? Whew!).

And TOUGIRL is right (not to mention unbelievably sexy!) about douching (and I'm saying this as arguably one of the biggest douches on Swingular).
She very well might be, it's just something a lady nurse at a women's clinic in SF told me almost 15 years ago, and she did say nothing but lukewarm water, no chemicals, vinegar, commercial douches, or anything and I understand that douching usually involves vinegar, which she said was a bad idea, so if that's the case I ought to stick it in. So it does seem some douches are actually bad, and I already knew that doing it regularly is bad, but people here are usually using condoms, so it wouldn't happen very often, would it?. And it did seem logical, to try to get rid of he stuff that had the germs, if any, in it. Anyone know an actual expert about that stuff that could be asked?

Oh- and goats do work much better than chickens. You can deal with the big mess by letting those chickens you didn't sacrifice clean it up for, and sell their eggs to help pay for the sacrificed goat.
Oh, Mr. Evil, you make me smile!

Evil I seriously doubt you are the biggest douche on here. You are going to have to try to be a bigger dick (be one, not have one) for that title. Sorry sexy.
