I have tried to search the forum but have to ask now.
The feature that was at the bottom of the page before that allowed one to chat with their friends that are currently on line..........is it gone now? I have the instant messenger activated under settings. Is there something else that needs to be done?

I believe it IS run by the media server, which runs the cams and microphone transmissions. Since they can't seem to be bothered, in 3 weeks now, even telling us what the problem is, when (or if) it will be back is anyone's guess. You might try this:

The messenger service and the chat-room problem appear completely different... The messenger service got pulled offline when the whole site switched to SSL a few weeks ago.. Presumably because CometChat (the software being used) doesn't support SSL.
Could Be. But that's when the cams went off, too, and we started getting the "no connection to media server" msg when logging in to chat. And I think IM may be processed as a streaming transmission, like cams and mikes are, instead of ordinary packet switching like email and probably text chat. If it is, it'd be using the same server. Either way, they haven't fixed it and I just cannot understand why they won't post something telling people what's wrong. So maybe if enough [.people send in request forms they'll at least say something about it.
