Swingers Forum - Watch out for motorcycles...

line
Previous Post Next Post
I was involved in a motorcycle accident last Wednesday in SLC. I was hit by a teenage driver that was using a turning lane to cut ahead of a long line of traffic. His impatience nearly got me killed. I got lucky and (thanks to wearing full riding gear) I walked away with "only" severe whiplash and a concussion. My baby, Ruby (2011 Yamaha R1, only 3k miles), is dead though. :(

The weather is warm and bikers are everywhere... PLEASE, watch out for bikers! 70% of accidents involving a motorcycle are the other vehicle's fault. In addition nearly 3/4 drivers involved in a crash with a motorcycle admit to never having even seen the biker. Please don't let yourself become a statistic!

I also had my helmet-mounted GoPro running. Here's a link to the video. I apologize in advance for the blip of profanity after the crash. Please share and stay alert out there!

When I ride (almost every day) I ride with the mindset that every fucktard in a steel box is totally out to get me. Either that or every twatwaffle in a steel box is yapping on their phone, binge eating an entire box of Krispy Kremes, masturbating furiously to kiddy porn on his iPhone and/or putting on makeup and painting their nails while paying about 95% less attention to the road than they do to Dancing With the Stars. So far I'm still alive but the odds are good that one day someone WILL take me out either on purpose or because they were busy checking out the pretty butterflies floating along in the azure blue summer sky rather than watching the road.
Mrs here. Holy crap! Dude you're lucky. Glad you were in full gear! I ride nearly every day and usually have some idiot try to cut me off. They're usually yacking away on their cell phones. I won't hesitate to roll up on them and give them a piece of mind. So far I've been lucky, but have had lots of close calls.
If you haven't talked to a lawyer do it quick. not my favoright person in the world but at times you need one.
Good you are Ok. It would not hurt to see a motorcycle lawyer for at least a free discussion. Whether on a bike or in a car we have to drive defensively. I have made my share of mistakes and have others make them for me. Fortunately I have never been seriously injured even though I have been through several totals. Not totaled a bike yet though.

Even though I enjoy the ride I always ride a little bit scarred of the idiots around me and that includes other bikers. I had one young man on a cycle whip around me the other day and pull in too close for my comfort.

Yes there is nothing like 2 wheels instead of 4 but there are times when I ride that I miss a full roll cage around me. Even though I have ridden exposed from time to time and from circumstance to circumstance, I believe that wearing protective gear on a cycle is as important as it is on a race track. At least on the track they are paying attention and not all trying to kill you.
I am glad you are ok Bro with no serious injuries! I know its a pain to loose Ruby. I'm military and am required to ride with full gear no matter what. I feel a lot better even though I know most of the time its not the rider but the driver. I ride with as much visibility as possible. If you ever see a black GXSR with a bright yellow Mohawk on the helmet and lights all around the bike at night, you'll know its me...

Coming from the south and riding with friends there, I learned an interesting technique to keep drivers off their tails. My buddies would keep marbles in their pockets. After several warnings to aggressive drivers to back off, they would reach in their pockets and let them fly! Don't worry readers, I don't use this technique. Lol.

Be safe out there and drivers please be aware!

That "technique" is more common here than you might think. Work very well.
We all know 75% of the drivers on the road are distracted by something, but evrybody always say. OMG, you got hit! They should say, "OMG, you have not been hit yet" to those that have not? I love bikes and I would love to hit the road on one. But as a safety director by perfession, I know it's an "at risk behavior" to ride on a public road. God bless you folkss on bikes, your something I'm not for sure. I hope you get better soon...
That is one frightening video, your camera puts us right there with you.
That driver that hit you sure seemed indifferent to the situation. He was in no hurry to reach you and check on you. He was a total POS, in my opinion. When I was in a multi-car accident many years ago I checked with all the other drivers immediately and luckily no one was hurt.
Glad to know that you are OK and survived it without suffering any physical damage.
As I have told my kids when they started driving, the definition of defensive driving is to always expect the other person to do something stupid. This just proves my point. I am glad you were
not hurt.
Marbles... Yessss
I miss riding a bike, but I don't trust drivers in Utah... I've seen too many people doing stupid shit while driving or just plain driving shitty (no turn signals, whipping back and forth between lanes, merging onto freeways at 40mph, etc) to have any belief that being on a motorcycle is safe. On a very similar note, please also stay out of the blindspots of Fiats... we really can't see shit on our passenger side. I have to check two or three times before switching lanes and most of the times I have to turn so far as to look directly out the rear window.
Both sides need to be more careful on the road. I nearly got in a wreck because the guy on the motorcycle decided he needed to pick his nose and started swerving back and forth and almost hit the side of my car. I also see motorcycles cut people off and do some pretty stupid things on the roads.
How the fuck could he pick his nose wearing armored gloves and a full face helmet? It's impossible. Believe me I've tried. Unless...wait, was he riding a scooter? Cause everyone knows scooter riders are kinda like the special needs kids of the motorcycling world. If You absolutely HAVE to run over someone please run over a scooter rider. Or anyone not wearing a helmet for that matter. If they're not wearing a helmet they're sorta saying "Fuck you! I DARE you to run over me!". But try to just squish just their head so they'll be more organs for transplant. I haven't been exactly kind to my liver and I may need a new one of them some day. Maybe even a few other organs too.
I make a joke about how it seems the roads are more crowded and it seems a bit more dangerous out there. Or it could be, I am getting older and my reflexes are not what they used to be. However I think it has something to do with a mini computer in everyone's hand or balanced on their knee's while driving.
In other news a guy drove for a couple of years with a cell jammer in his car. He stated " It keeps people off the phone around me and focused" When he was finally caught.
Good to read you are OK.

He wasn't wearing gloves, hell come to think of it he was wearing shorts and what looked like a bike helmet... that would explain a lot.
They got me Wednesday (June 11th) night on the way home from work.

I think people also need to be more cognizant of drunken freeway walkers as well.

And aardvarks. Watch out for feral, marginally wasted aardvarks.
Great footage! Glad you were in full gear, most importantly the helmet!! Glad you're ok
Yeah, it really cracks us up when people say "the only difference between a helmet or no helmet, is open or closed casket funeral". Well, that's just simply not true, and statistics don't lie! Wearing your helmet and other protective gear, can and does in a lot of cases prevent more serious injury, or may even save your life! Be safe out there fellow riders, and watch out for everybody who's doing everything but driving!

Having worked in an ER as well as on a rehab unit in a previous life I can also tell you that helmets DO save lives. Now if you're talking those stupid little half helmets then you may have a point. The majority of severe injury and death is from massive facial trauma so wear a good Snell approved full face helmet (and gear with body armor) and ride like the fucktards in steel boxes are out to get you because intentionally or not they really are.
