Okay I know this is a swinger site but I have found that a lot of people can be helpful on here so I figure why not try it. My mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer recently and we are going through a decision making process.
Those who know me, know i am a physician but I guess looking for if anyone has gone through this or know people who have and had mastectomies. Looking to see if you know how bad the swelling in the arms is ? Does it last a long time?
Any help would be great, feel free to private message me if you want.
Sorry for anyone out there who thinks this post is inappropriate.

As the perpetrator of many inappropriate posts I can assure you this one is fine. Swelling is very individualized and depends on many factors including how many lymph nodes (and where) are dissected. The swelling is definitely not as bad as it used to be for most patients nowadays. But being a physician you probably already know this. Have had two family members go thru this in the past few years and post-op is definitely better than it was back in the day.
My wife had a procedure that essentially empties the skin of the breast and at the same time they implant expanders. Her lymph nodes were not involved. Infiltating ductal carcinoma aggressive and triple neg to hormones. Was called a nipple saving procedure. Swelling was very minimal in the arms as all they had to do was the pilot node removal.
After dealing with cancer in the family I decided to read up on other alternatives.

My mom had breast cancer 4 years ago and is doing great. We decided on just removing the lumps and the tissue because as you know in older patients the survival rate does not increase with a mastectomy. So, we opted for the surgery that would be easiest on her. They removed her lymph nodes, and tissue from both breasts. Please make sure they leave the drains in long enough so there is not secondary swelling that requires additional draining. That happened to my mom and she was miserable going in every day to have it drained under her arm. Her oncologist was simply amazing and is local. My mom was also suffering from dementia and did not understand what was going on, and the Bitner Center was incredible with her, and so very kind even though she was challenging.
Oh, I apologize I didn't notice until now that you are located in New York. Best of luck. It is a very difficult time, but it is easier if you have your plan of action laid out ahead of time.
