It does have video chat capabilities, but it's not quite as feature-full as the main chat. It does seem to be working though, which can't be said for the main.
Most seem to be going into the chatroom "when chat is broken lo...". You can use the "pop out" feature so that it doesn't interfere with your browsing of profiles and whatnot.
Makes a decent stop-gap until Admin addresses the problem with the main chat.
Please post here on occasion to keep this on the main page near the top, and also to let others know if the primary chat is still down.

Just created a room called "Alternate Chat".
It seems the creator of a room has the ability to ban others from it. So the creator of the "when chat is broken lo..." banned me for fun :-/

It seems that the view profile functionality in the alternate chat is broken, but video chat does work. To start it someone has to click the cam button in the upper left of the chat to start broadcasting. Others can view it then by clicking the link it posts to the chat.
There's no whisper or private chat option, so to have a private setting you'll want to create a private chat room and invite the person you want to directly communicate with.. either that, or use the instant messaging feature of the site.

When you click the Chatrooms link, it should pop up a box with tabs in it. The first tab is Lobby. Inside the lobby tab click on the link labeled "alternate chat"
I am unable to find the link to this alternate chat you mentioned. For the primary chat, it says something about opening 2 ports but try as I might I can't seem to get those ports open in my router.
Right now the alternate chat is also down. It's handled through the instant messenger that usually runs at the bottom of the screen. It's up and down intermittently. It had been more stable than the primary chat for a while, but now they're both kind of languishing maintenance wise.
