So every once in a while I log in and get the message notify pop up and there are no messages in my mailbox. Now I get real excited when things pop up but when they dont actually follow through and perform its a bit of a downer ;-)
So I'm just curious what kind of bug this is... are messages not really getting through or is it that someone wrote a message and canceled it before sending or never finished it and left there computer or ???...

Apparently it's on Viagra and is having a more then 4 hour pop up.
i am experiencing the same thing . i wrote the admins about it and they said to notify them next time it happened , i did but never heard back again ... its still doing it though .
What's most likely happening is someone has emailed you, then their account was disabled for one reason or another. When you log in, it sees the email so it notifies you but since the account is disabled, you don't see it. But because the account is disabled, the message gets deleted. That's the only logical thing we can think of. Since we can't repeat the issue ourselves, it's hard to troubleshoot the problem.
It could also be that if you don't log out using the log out button, some old information sticks around and pops up when you first log in.

This question is a little different... We get approved friend requests from people we know we did not make a friend request of. And when we do an email history for these same approvals, there is no request from us. Anyone else experience this?

Yes kinda the same thing...we have recieved emails from couples that are "chatting" with someone else, we recieved an email from a couple on sat night, that they would be at an party and couldnt wait to see us... this has happend 6/8 times,over the last month, and also we have been approved for friends request when we didnt request it.
