Since every one on here is so afraid to post on here I want to extend my thoughts to the Japanese people. I am thinking of Swingtide and wondering they are ok. Please give if you can. What a mess it is I can not even imagine what they are going through.
My heart absolutely goes out to the people of Japan - and I wish them well.

Butt I draw the line at sending them money and food.
Japan is NOT a poor, 3rd-world nation - it's in fact, a quite prosperous nation.
It's time we concentrate on the hungry and homeless of our own country.

If that sounds cruel, I'm NOT sorry for saying it.
I'm just tired of us helping everyone except ourselves.
While charity might begin at home I see no point in not helping anyone who is in need if you should have the means and willingness to do so. Pretty sure Karma doesn't have international boarders.

But if you do choose to donate funds/goods, make sure you deal with a reputable company. There are obviously going to be a lot of scammers out. Most churches, Red Cross, and so forth are pretty good places to make a contribution.

In the meantime, I've been thinking about if my family is prepared for some sort of emergency and me and the kids have been making survival kits; food, clothes, hygiene, etc. It's been an invaluable learning moment with them.

"T" - I certainly can't argue with your "follow your heart" philosophy.
Shame on me for not adding that option in MY post.

By all means, folks - go with your conscience.
The people of Japan clearly need help and if YOUR heart is there, by all means give. But I wonder how many people from there or here sent money to the Gulf Coast of the USA or are helping the family down the street that is losing their home. My heart goes out to the people of Japan but my pocket book is staying at home to help where I can here because I believe we need to take care of our own first. If that sound terrible, so be it. There are so many homeless here that need just as much help with food, clothing, and medical but we are not putting them on 24hour news loops. And if you think that our own are being taken care of, you have your head up you
Yet you wont hear them bitch and whine, you will hear the say "we will deal with the hand we were dealt." No complaints, just lets get to work and get on with our lives.

I guess from my past and knowing How great they truly are. I have a connection.
Chili..7.3 Quake Haiti 8.3 Quake...Japan 9.0 quake...Los Angeles Ca.9.3? What if. I would hope they would help us. Hey but if you are not into it it is cool. Wonder what would happen if Yellow Stone went up? We are all of this earth.

A man was found floating on debris 10 miles off the coast for over 24 hours. He lost his home and his wife in one swoop of nature, and is grateful to his rescuers and raised his hands to the heavens to thank his God. A Very sad state of affairs in a land that I became to love. I am saddened to see the devastation and the sense of hopelessness but the Japanese people are strong and will not falter. The beauty of Japan will shine through.
I dont understand about folks not wanting to talk about Japan. It is a sad story and will effect us all more than we currently can imagine. My thoughts go out to all the atomic firefighters who are trying to save more of the World and their country than most of you care to comprehend.

It's just like watching an accident in a freeway; most people would just say "that sucks, glad it's not me"

I'm just surprised how no one is talking about this as well

I agree with both maybemor and freeridestl; either most people aren't keeping themselves updated in what is going on in japan (should I even start with libya) or they just don't care. If one of the cores get out of hand and inevitably a meltdown occurs this will cause a chain reaction that can take out all six reactors as well as hundreds of spent fuel rods stored in them (when melt down occurs they will evacuate the last 50 workers from the whole plant). In comparison there was only one reactor that went on meltdown in chernobyl.
This is some serious shit going down and we have been distracted. Libya, the Middle East, North Africa. Japan, has been left in the dust. I cant believe It is now story# 5 on the networks on cable....It is like OH well. We are talking about the down fall of an entire culture and people. We are losing an ally. Shame and our leader is doing nature walks in So. America!!!!
It was just a simple request to help others in need! For those who stated they would rather help out here in our own states then by all means do it! talk is cheap! Besides someone here might have family there. I for one have nieces who grandparents are there and a close friend who dad does work for the u.s there. So you are not just help "them" out but helping u.s citizens as well! Red cross well only do so much anyways. If your house burns down and you loose everything they will put in a hotel for three days! WOW! OH boy i never comment on here but this was shit!!! Here wanting to help in your own neighborhood how about getting some laws changed. Did you know its against the law to house a run away (or a child who was kick out of there home). There are hundreds of kids having to sleep in the cold in utah because shelters can not lets them sleep there? during the night. but may stop in to shower during the day. Hard to get a job when you have o address or message phone...
people will start caring more very soon; our economy is going down again for a double dip, but this time I doubt that there will be another stimulus to slow down the inevitable.
If you don't believe it will effect you think again, New regulations here are going to close Appox 5 plants nation wide forcing us back to coal, and or water, there isn't enough. If you think gas prices are solely because of the middle east you are mistaken. Coal prices are on the climb to 176.00 per ton up from 125.00. It will have a devastating impact on the world economy.Energy is what drives the world and the disaster in Japan will indeed effect us all.
It appears my worst fears are becoming a reality. It now appears that indeed at least one of those explosions was from inside a containment vessel if not multiple containment vessels that are now leaking. They basically were without the control or monitoring for 12 days and probably even now most of the instrumentation is non operational. So most of that steam or smoke we have seen for 11 days has been radioactive contaminated. That fits with all the radiation readings spiking at distances of 250 km. Water contaminated at 10,ooo times safe levels! Thatis alot of zero's and numbers with large zeros time safe limits are very large dangers for a very long long time.
Once we factor in the final costs of lost land use, total relocation, long term health effects and birth defects which might take hundreds of years this Nuclear power idea is going to look like a bad investment that we heaped on the children of this World.
The good thing is this will surely doom nuclear power in Utah if not the US.
What is the deal with tow tourists arriving in China with high readings and they weren't even near the plant?
The amazing thing about this is that people are worried about the safety of radiation from a nuclear power plant that was the focus of a major (8.9) earthquake. No one is looking at the routine levels of radiation produced by such plants vs. the radiation levels routinely produced by coal plants.
While disasters at nuclear plants can create major issues the constant routine waste from coal plants is significantly higher in radiation and damage to the environment.
And let's not forget underground coal mine fires, many of them naturally occurring.

Even with the accident, of the 87+ thousand people in the area only 98, or .001%, of the people showed signs of unsafe levels of radiation. Those signs were determined to be from the affected individual's clothing as the were tested again after removing the clothing and found to be below unsafe levels. Also keep in mind most of this is beta radiation, even at extreme levels it's similar to cooking yourself out in the sun, granted you can get skin cancer from it as well as from suntanning.

Saying that we should halt nuclear power and reinforce our dependence on oil and coal because of this disaster is about the same as saying we should get rid of bridges because some of them collapse during natural disasters, or stop building on coastlines where hurricanes can hit, or evacuate the plains because of potential flooding and tornadoes. While I would love to see a clean, renewable power source suddenly appear that can handle our power requirements for a reasonable cost I don't see anything on the horizon for the levels we need. Nuclear power is still the best, and safest, source of power production we have in order to wean the US from oil and coal. And without getting rid of those two the environment is truly, and royally, fucked.
My thoughts go out to japan. I have a very dear friend that lost her father and her sister in the tsunami and i came close to losing my cousin in it. it is very sad. i cant do anything for them because i dont have the means but my thoughts and prays are with them through this time.

I do have family there
I agree with darkandladyjedi about how nuclear energy is a lot more safer than coal mines. The problem is the people running the company, they cut cost by cutting out safety standards; who puts a nuclear plant on a major fault line........ oh wait, india and the US

btw I heard the rain in tokyo was yellow on wednesday and the government stated it was pollen that caused it. Didn't the same thing happen in chernobyl?
