So when I host parties I always have trouble picking out music.. so I would love your suggestions. What genre do you like to listen to at house parties, any favorite songs that should not be missed?
Oh man this topic can go a MILLION ways ...
Personally, I think that anything with a good beat, that isn't too loud (i.e. volume) starts a party off well. I'm sure you know all the classics but anything that encourages dancing is probably a good choice. My current fav is "The Heavy - How you like me now?" ... great beat and horns.
I think something that gets overlooked at all the clubs that I have been to is music for the 2am to 4am time slot. By that time, most people don't really want anything energetic and upbeat but they're not looking for Mozart necessarily either. So I would suggest looking online for any album entitled: Ministry of Sound Chill-out. If you're not familiar, think of dance tracks that have been remixed to about 1/2 their normal speed. It is still upbeat enough to keep people awake without being pounding and heavy.
If you need/want any specific suggestions, feel free to email me!

The Basement Jaxx...any of the Global Underground albums...But, that depends on what kind of crowd you're trying to attract.

The tricky part is the volume. Can you find a balance between being able to visit while others are dancing?
There's not usually a whole lot of "dancing" at the house parties we go too...but...we always find a nice mix of classic rock from our era (yikes we're classic rock lol) and today's "hits" but yes, a nice in-between volume where you can hear it but it doesn't drown everyone out is definitely key

Put this on and you will do fine. http://www.last.fm/group/Chill+Out Mr. C
I like using last.fm as well as pandora.
I also have the top 40 lists for the US & UK
Then I have my own personal playlist of oodles of genres. I usually mix up the top 40s with rock and punk cuz people tend to tell me my british stuff sucks. hahaha

+2
We have a mixture of hip-hop, rock and pop. Key is keeping the music upbeat, in my opinion. We also have a few fave songs for working the pole to, including: My Darkest Days- Porn Star Dancing, Trick Daddy- Sugar, Eminem- Shake That Ass, and a few more of a special blend.
