I chose my profession because thats what my family has always done...I am not doing well with the guy I just patched up was a drunk driver that hurt other people...should I go another way?
Lost over your posting. Some clarification? Did you sew up the drunk driver or was he a date? If you sewed him up, then good on you. You followed your heart and didn't judge based on circumstance. Let the justice system prevail.
If you are dating him, dump his ass now! He is a total loser.

I am a surgeon third year, I just helped a drunk driver live while his victims may not make it...he will live...
As I said earlier, good on ya. You lived up to your oath which is the hardest thing in life. It is not our jobs to play God, just to do our job. You have risen above the rest to become one of the best.

I cry for those effected...a robot they did train me for...sorry just reaching out ...
Feel free to reach out. Comfort is so important in your career. You did well and should be rewarded by it. But the rewards are just emotional. Sorrow for the families involved.
Regardless of how much a shithead he is, he does have a mother/father who care about him. He may have a brother/sister/children who love him. You helped them. Screw him but help them. That is who you helped them.

look at it this way...your hands are clean...you saved a life and most lives are worth saving. He was indeed a jack ass, careless, thoughtless, and clueless. But generally not a malevolent type. Maybe he will live, become a better person, give some sort of restitution to the families he hurt and maybe even become an example and a teacher to others on the perils of drunk driving.
Of course you don't know...but you at least give him the chance to do right, you can rest easy tonight knowing you did the right thing and used your talents and abilities to save a human life....he on the other hand will have the rest of his life you gave him to ponder his actions and deal with the results of those actions...his hands will never, never be clean.

thanks guys...maybe I can sleep tonight...Kate
I know how you feel. I am in the medical profession and have seen this for the past 15 years. The drunks always seem to live and the innocent die. I say just keep going, it gets easier but you never forget the innocent people.
Well, up to CNKISS post I thought I had some inspiration to add. But they just about took the words straight off of my head.
The only thing I could think to add would be to tell you to remember about Karma. It IS a b!tch!! Because that guy (and hopefully you) is going to fine out one day that somethings in life are WORSE then death. Guilt is one of them. He has to live with the facts of what he did. Just like you do. If you have to fall back on something try thinking of it this way. You fix people. You don't fix mechanics. You don't fix teachers. You don't fix bank robbers. You don't fix Cops. All that's just what they do. Your job is more important.....You fix PEOPLE.
As for "reaching out". You go right ahead. There are some super nice and intelligent people in here. Coming in here is like group therapy. Just without the $300 per hr price tag....LOL.

Kate, Great job for doing what you have invested many years of education and training. It is not your job to decide your fate. Just use your talents for what was intended. The guy will have to answer for what he did sooner or later in another place.
I'll say thank you for all that you do. I've been running Fire and EMS for a few years now and I couldn't do what you do on a daily basis. Kudos and stick with it.

think of it as this experience could save someone in the future....knowledge is beautiful....you did the right thing....
I recently revisited a news story from Iraq. A US medic was shot from 75 yds away by a team of Al Qaeda snipers. Hit him solid but his vest saved him. His team then chased down the snipers and shot them up, he, the medic who was shot, was first on the scene and proceeded to save the life of the asshole that sniped him... (his interview is on you tube)
Its what you do... be proud of what you do and who you are, you are driven to be a life saver, you are skilled at it now, judgment belongs elsewhere not for you. Sorrow for the victims? No doubt its terrible, but doubting what you did and do? No,be proud and be grateful that you have the gift and skills that you do...

Looks like it's all been said. Yours is to save who you can, and not to judge who they are or what they've done. My two bits - Thank you from the bottom of my heart for investing all those years to learn how to do what you do. Don't let incidents like these stop you or slow you from using what you've learned to help the rest of us. You are a gift from god. One like you saved my life, and the life of my grand daughter. Remember all the good you've done, and, if you actually do feel guilty for saving a life that may not have deserved saving, put that away. And remember we all love you guys, the entire profession. Even the docs that have personality problems save lives. Keep it up.
Fortune favors no one. Thank goodness it doesn't, or it wouldn't be fair. We are grateful for people like you who have the desire, and talent to heal others. One such as you, a very skilled pediatric surgeon saved the life of our daughter who had a very bad kidney tumor. Without her skill, the tumor may not have been compleatly removed, and the treatments may not have worked. Today she is cancer free and enjoying life. As for treating people who may or may not deserve it, that is a determination that no human being is capable of making, for we can not know the full story of who they are, what they did, or what they may become. There was a Dr. Mudd who treated John Wilkes Booth for a broken leg, was convicted of aiding and abetting the assassin, spent a few years in prison, and was then pardoned. This was a good doctor, who did his duty to heal an injured person, and was punished because of public outrage at the assassination of the President. The doctor did right, both as a doctor and as a human being. The mob that arrested and convicted him, let their emotions cloud their judgement and a good man and his family suffered because of it. Which one would you rather be in the long run?
