Having never been to a spice party I cant Judge an actual spice party. I went to a party with the same crowd and felt like I was at a middle school dance where I just wanted to be a wallflower and pretend I wasnt there. Very Clicky, I am sure If I became a regular there and got to know some of the people I am sure that would change. But I dont want to. I will point out that I felt the same way at my first party from another group..
However in the crowd we prefer to hang around Its the same way (we're like Arent those the spice party people Ewwww !) Just kidding ! we dont really. However we dont go out of our way to go over and chat with these people either. Ways to point out Swingers in public - - HAHAHA Yeah, I wouldn't ever think it is a guarantee on any level. We always wonder when we see other women wearing them. But as you mention, it seems like A LOT of people wear them, so we would never approach someone based on that. :)
Hopefully at some point someone does approach us based on how i'm dressed, etc. But in our experience it means more for our playtime and fun than anyone else :)

We take that approach to anyone, including. Even couples have to "prove" themselves to us. We've found more asshole married dudes than in the single male side.
